LUMIN is a brand exploring and reinterpreting traditional design concepts, and is strongly influenced by eastern culture and design philosophy. Their aim is to create an authentic aesthetic for their luxury ready-to-wear clothing that is true to the local experience, but which is also internationally appealing. Pieces with a timeless appeal and a easy transition between different occasions is the basis of the brand’s identity. Ultimately, LUMIN is inspired by the need for versatility and a desire for style in the modern wardrobe. CLOTHING DNA LUMIN’s design is known for being minimalistic and monochromatic. The Autumn/Winter 2015 collection captures simplicity in form and shape, whilst adding detail through colour and texture. The style is primarily ready-to-wear, with an emphasis on creating true local designer luxury clothing for the local and international market. Colour palettes of deep blood reds are accentuated and contrasted with turquoise, which extended and developed the monochromatic black and white that is the brand’s custom. COLLECTION INSPIRATION The Autumn/Winter 2015 collection is inspired for the most part by traditional types of dress found in East Asian cultures like Japan and China, where it is considered to be sophisticated and beautiful to have less revealing clothing. With this we have translated monastic themes and undertone into the collection, combined with ideas of uniformity and a strong sense of structure and community – as embodied by our patterns and cuts.

Tart is a Cape Town based ladies’ wear brand established in 2001 by designer, Cari Stephenson. Tart clothing strives to be the label of choice for women who lead active, enquiring lives and are looking for simple, fuss-free pieces to slip on and go. With the energetic spirit of the brand always at the forefront of our design, Tart pieces transcend seasonal barriers and provide comfort while never compromising on style. Although the brand is always current, it is not trend driven and each piece has the potential to become a wardrobe staple. Tart aims to be commercially accessible, with quality, style and affordability as key factors in garment production. Tart is proudly South African and all items are produced locally – both in-house and through CMT. CLOTHING DNA Although Tart has its roots in the tee-shirt, the brand has evolved to include all aspects of leisure wear. Simple silhouettes and cleanly cut, soft jersey knits are the cornerstone of each range. Dresses are a staple of the Tart look, with fit, ease and wearability at the heart of each design. Tart dresses incorporate inner support and linings so that the wearer feels as good as she looks. Tart clothing fuses a sport lux approach with signature in-house-designed prints to create collections that stand out from the crowd. COLLECTION INSPIRATION With a nod to the 70s, this season the Tart woman is feeling empowered, emboldened and very sensual. This collection is based on women’s many character roles and “alter egos”, real and imagined, which all fit together to form each individual woman. The print is bolder than ever and the colours used – red, purple, black and gold – are associated with passion, opulence, sophistication and luxury. Amid varied silhouettes incorporating draping, fluidity, volume and tailoring, Tart has played with diverse textiles including chiffon, leather, suede, silk, jersey knits, 100% wool suiting, velvet and chain mail. And the hand knotted fringing from winter ‘14 is back with a bang this year! AWARDS/ACCOLADES 2012: Solange Knowles chooses to wear Tart on the cover of Elle Magazine SA (November)

COLLECTION INSPIRATION Memories of bygone summers, romances that were, the free-spirited lifestyle of the 1970’s and the music of Claudine Longet inspire this resort collection. This season we preface the collection with key swimwear pieces that the brand has become famous for.
Again the fluidity and Bond-like quality of the swimwear in the 70’s come to the fore. The collection is built on separates in soft fluid fabrication, cobweb filet cotton laces, Swiss broderie anglaise, dreamy floral prints, lush tulles, brocades and luxurious tweeds to ward of evening draughts. Chic, independent women with a quiet sexiness infuse the collection.
Pin tucks, folds, faggotting and pleats play a huge part in this collection with exceptionally intricate garment construction. Washed out colours echo the poignancy of memories reflected in old photographs together, with romantic florals that evoke the scents of summer bouquets juxtaposed with retro-geometric prints and metallics on swimwear. This collection once again is for the Rajah client – bold, assertive, ultra-feminine and very discerning.

The brand aims to establish itself as a prestigious local menswear brand with a reputation for close attention to detail. Hand crafted on site by our dedicated team of tailors, we merge traditional tailoring methods with strong symmetrical cuts and modern designs. Functionality, quality and individuality are the brand’s core values.
Clothing DNA
Fusing our traditional tailoring and leather craftsmanship, the brand’ss distinctive cuts and attention to detail, contrasted with the natural and soft textures of high quality leather and wools, culminates in our signature monochromatic look.
Collection Inspiration
Delving deeper into the brand’s identity, and following our Spring Summer 2015 collection “Be August”, which means to be majestic, dignified and revered, we once again focus on the key word ‘grandeur’ for this collection. For the Autumn/ Winter 2015 collection we will focus on visually translating the finery and power of style and appearance, whilst adhering to the brand’s core value – functionality – which will guide the construction of the collection.
AUGUSTINE
To design and manufacture a clothing line that is the embodiment of classic elegant luxury, designed to appeal to women’s sense of worth and timeless style. We create sophisticated tailored designs, using quality materials, applying the highest standard of integrity in our workmanship.
Our philosophy at Grapevine is to create more than clothing, but to transform the perception of those wearing our clothing and inspire assertiveness in them.
CLOTHING DNA
Timeless, elegant and feminine. Grapevine clothing is more about style and effortless grace than fashion, and aims to speak to the deep underlying honest strength and confidence every woman has. We like to emphasise a “to have and to hold” quality in our garments – pieces which reflect a timeless and distinct style, and signify that even as we move forward we carry a little bit of who we were forward with us. Our silhouettes are designed to flatter the female form and emphasises all that makes a woman unique – the soft lines of her curves and her delicate yet sure touch on life.
Collection Inspiration
With the colours and prints this season it’s the clash of the positive and negative, the story of “half empty or half full”. The inspiration behind the range is the current state of our society: On one side we are making progress while on the other side there is still so many negative societal problems pulling us back. The Grapevine woman will be dressed with confidence representing hope, whilst in full consciousness of the dualistic negative-positive state of modern life.

AKEDO is not just about the clothing label – it becomes a lifestyle. The AKEDO marketing strategy is to engage it’s consumers in a way which promotes repeated loyal customers.
CLOTHING DNA
The AKEDO brand officially launched in January 2014. The brand aims to create an aesthetic which merges sophistication with “weirder” or “stranger” design than what is usually considered ‘African’ design. Rather than designing the typical ethnocentric African design, the AKEDO brand interprets the continent in a way true to the brand instead of a way expected for an African brand. Interpreting Africa for what it is, rather than what it is imagined to be or expected to be.
Collection Inspiration
The main inspiration for the AW15 collection was to focus on true African traditions such as beading and painting and interpret those traditions into a collection which is contemporary and speaks for the rainbow nation of cultures within South Africa, as opposed to representing an ethnocentric view of the country. Using a vivid colour palette contrasted with simplistic tailored silhouettes, the collection speaks for both the country while still incorporating the AKEDO aesthetic.

LAND is a South African based label with a focus on a behind-the-scenes aesthetic. We focus on sportswear-inspired cuts in comfortable fabrics and styling that allows you to work comfortably and stylishly. LAND currently occupies the space between pure minimalism and highly detailed embellishment. Working with the tension between the two, LAND aims to produce pieces that offer function and well-crafted form.
Clothing DNA
LAND is a product of two opposing ideas: The simple aesthetic of a clean, minimal surface which accentuates the beauty, comfort and functionality of simplicity; and the obsessive detail found in embellished surfaces, often due to traditional beading and weaving, which absorbs and fascinates the viewer. This contrast is explored through athletic/ work-wear inspired pieces that reflect ease and comfort.
Collection Inspiration
The LAND Autumn/Winter15 collection is called ‘The Seduction of Impermanence’. It has been inspired by the narrative ‘”Clothes in which to ponder meaninglessness, which is a A 10 act play in which the protagonist experiences the profound sensation that nothing matters”. The collection takes its secondary inspiration from the colours and textures found in nature because that’s where we imagine the protagonist to do most of her wandering/ wondering.

Since its inception in 2003, when his first catwalk collection was presented, the label has gone from strength to strength. Over the 10 years since launching his brand, award-winning designer, David Tlale, has proven that he is indeed a veritable design force with creations that exceed expectations.
Clothing DNA
The silhouettes: David Tlale’s Fall 2015 collection uses simple, clean lines and structured patterns with the aims to simply try and restore order in the world. Textures: silk brocades, leather, Chantilly lace and wools. The play on texture combines both soft and hard, which is an interpretation of the way Tlale views human emotions under these awry circumstances.
Collection Inspiration
“The world is crying out for help and attention. All the grief and inner turmoil that has been bubbling under is now erupting and people are lashing out. Looking at the current disasters in Nigeria, Malaysia, the US and France. It is a calamity everywhere. The world needs hope again,” says Tlale.
In these times of turmoil, where the world seems to be ruled by fire, David Tlale looks to world disasters for inspiration. The Fall 2015 Collection draws inspiration from the volcanic aftermath. The bubbling lava, spewing eruptions, and colliding rivers of fire symbolize the current world climate, where senseless bombings and killing of the innocent seems to be the news we consume.
Tlale has employed the use of digital prints to depict the deadly aftermath of these eruptions, which are juxtaposed against the use of delicate silk and lace fabrics to illustrate the delicate human emotion often experienced after these ordeals.

High-quality fabrics and finishes give the brand a luxury feel, whilst still being young, quirky, and edgy. Our motto is: Buy less, choose wisely, buy local.
Collection Inspiration
“This collection was born as a reaction to the hatred, violence and terror. With terrorist attacks in Paris, Nigeria and Syria, to name a few, and the xenophobic outbreaks closer to home, we began thinking how immune we have become to loss of life. Another headline, another day. Nowadays a roll of the dice can dictate ones’ fortune. Lives become like pawns in a child’s game. Innocence lost. People are brazenly killed because of their religion, beliefs, origin or even their luckless location. It goes beyond race and creed to the point where Africans kill fellow Africans.
We sit back in our cushioned lives and watch thle chaos unfold. We are all terrorists.” – Samantha Constable.

Selfi is a ready-to-wear women’s clothing brand based in Cape Town. The brand was created in 2009 by fashion designer Celeste Lee Arendse. Selfi ensembles exude a playful, yet sophisticated and cool elegance that tends to enhance the natural beauty of any women. Attention is paid to the manipulation of form, print and colour which are all used to create ready-to-wear pieces that ensure comfort and style.
Clothing DNASelfi Autumn/ Winter 2015 has a strong digital-print focus and is specifically inspired by 20th century russian artists, like Kazimir Malevich, for colour inspiration and shapes which are birthed from the ‘Suprematism’ art movement. Baby pink, royal blue and red embossed on fine lined blocked prints make up our colour palette, while floating hands and abstract images of the ‘self’ have inspired the shapes used. Style details include boxy shaped crop tops with over the knee pencil and flare skirts, polo neck jumpers, and baseball tailored jackets. Hemlines are over the knee, taking us back to a sporty 40s and 90s feel. Collection InspirationFor the Selfi 2015 Autumn/Winter Collection, aspects of the ‘Self’ were explored and dissected by looking at the current age of the ‘self’ vs. the age of modern technology, and how these two have merged over time. The floating hands, found in our prints, are symbolic of hands that create, as technological advances have made the practical use of our hands less necessary. Another big inspiration was the idea that human beings are energy manifested in a solid body, and this energy makes us abstract and multifaceted – almost transcendental. Aspects of the “feminine” and “masculine” parts of the ‘Self’ were also explored, as well as the ways in which they merge and become one whole. For example, women dressed in traditionally male clothing and men wearing traditionally female attire demonstrate the ambiguity of the gender divide. All of these ideas have culminated in a collection that has ‘sport luxe’ and ‘androgyny’ as its major themes. Awards / Accolades 2014 - Young Entrepreneur competition winner in connection with South Africa and the British Council - Winners won a trip to London and were given access to fashion industry related events: London Fashion Week, showrooms, designer studio visits, museums, and attended workshops and design related talks.
